This is a new Swedish production from 2008 about the 11-year-old boy Habib. Living in a small suburb to Stockholm, he´s searching for the meaning of life while dreaming about being together with Paris, his big love. The film is based upon the books of Douglas Foley.

Synopsis: One of the earth-shaking feature debuts in the history of cinema, Maurice Pialat´s L´Enfance -nue provides a perspective on growing-up that rejects both sentimentality and modish cynisism. Its unflinching, but also warmly accommodating, outlook on childhood attracted Francois Truffaut to take on the role as co-producer of Pialat´s film. First-time actor Michel Tarrazon plays the young Francois, a provincial orphan whose destructive behaviour precipitates his relocation from the home of a long-term foster family to the care of a benevolent elderly couple. In the course of this transition, Pialat´s film presents the turbulence of Francois´s unmoored existence, and his explosive reactions to the contradictory emotions it engenders. L´Enfance -nue represents the ideal introduction to the films of Maurice Pialat.
Some words in Swedish: Åter igen en fransk film med ett antal år på nacken, närmare bestämt är den här filmen ursprungligen från 1969, men finns numera även i DVD-format med utmärkt bild-och ljudkvalitet. Det här är en riktigt sevärd och genuin film för den relativt breda filmpubliken, och ett måste för den verklige cineasten. Här är man långt borta från amerikansk standardproducerad underhållningsfilm, men utan att det blir pretentiöst.

In this marvellous French film from 2007 we meet two couples of brothers somewhere in undefined Eastern Europe in 1856. Combined historical environment with an astonishing photo and sparse dialogs make this film about friendship, murder, revenge and finally love to that movie you didn´t want to miss. I watched it myself at a film festival last year!

Coming of age is a young person’s transition from adolescence to adulthood. The age at which this transition takes place varies in society, as does the nature of the transition. It can be a simple legal convention or can be part of a ritualistic cycle, similar to those once practiced by many societies. In the past, and in some societies today, such a change is associated with the age of sexual maturity (mid-adolescence); in others, it is associated with an age of religious responsibility. Particularly in western societies, modern legal conventions which stipulate points in late adolescence or early adulthood (most commonly 18 and 21, at which time adolescents are generally no longer considered minors and are granted the full rights of an adult) are the focus of the transition. In either case, many cultures retain ceremonies to confirm the coming of age, and significant benefits come with the change.
The term coming of age is also used in reference to different media such as stories, songs, movies, etc. that have a young character or characters who, by the end of the story, have developed in some way, through the undertaking of responsibility, or by learning a lesson.
This is my blog about coming of age films. I´ve so far tried to collect and describe as many various films as possible, from the simplest children´s films to more sophisticated drama movies. All the films in the blog are selected for one reason or another and none are here in random or just to fill up blog space. Some of the films have a subtle or overt homoerotic theme, many have not. Some describe matters that are more sensitive or delicate than most mainstream films, but other films can be seen and appreciated by almost everyone. The blog is expanding continually, but sometimes there will be one new blogpost once a week or less, and sometimes several posts in the same day. It all depends on my time schedule because I´m not a full time blogger, and I´m working full time with something completely different as well. I should also mention that I have no financial or other connections to any film company or film seller and I´m not responsible for material published on other film sites to where I have links. I also would like to emphasize how much I love to get comments on the posts. Please don´t hesitate to comment on the films.
