Malèna

Nominated for two Oscars in 2001 for best cinematography (Lajos Koltai) and best music (Ennio Morricone), one nomination at the Berlin International Film Festival (Golden Berlin Bear), the audience award at the European Film Awards, the Golden Globe at the Golden Globes, USA, and many other nominations including winning at David di Donatello Awards and Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists, this is a well acclaimed Italian coming of age masterpiece.  It´s a strong story about the young boy Renato Amaroso taking place in the beginning of the WWII in a sleepy village in fascist Italy.  The conditions of life in such a place where gossip goes around fast and the Italian catholic moral ideas are very present are authentically woven together with the story of Renato´s journey into manhood. Malèna is the most beautiful woman in town, and Renato´s life changes from the day he first sets his eyes on her. This is a really nice film, with a beautiful photo, excellent acting and with an entertaining and ”genuinely erotic” (Washington Post) story. The director is Giuseppe Tornatore, the writer and director of  ”Cinema Paradiso”. The boy is played by Giuseppe Sulfaro (born in 1984).

Giuseppe is beautiful and, I should think this is clear to anyone, immensely talented. The look in his eyes on photo ”Malena11″ is entirely genuine and credible.

I saw this film recently , but can`t remember why I did not review it – but whatever the reason was I am glad that you did it. I remembered that I liked the film – its a classic coming of age one – even trough for some reasons I did not associate with the lead character as it usually happens when I watch this film…( may be because as a kid I was never after mature women – well except Pamela Anderson – mostly of girls my age ) There is another film I reviewed at my blog : Uranya which seems to be often associated with Malena http://www.theskykid.com/2009/04/10/uranya and which I seemed to like better.

Monica Bellucci is beautiful in the film and her acting alongside the acting of the other actors is quite good. Your review made me think of the several good Italian coming of age films out there such as 1900 ,Io non ho paura,Acla’s Descent into Floristella , Sapore Del Grano and of course Sacret Silence.
